I remember the JFK assassination being on the news, but the first story I really followed was the hunt for Harry Roberts in 1966. I remember the search for him, all around Epping Forest. Then he was caught, asleep, in Thorley Wood, near Bishop's Stortford.

Iranian Embassy siege. I had chicken pox and remember watching hours of the Snooker world championship when they broke in with the live feed.

Might have seemed disastrous at the time but Poland were a force to be reckoned with in those days. Next year in Germany, they were a waterlogged pitch and a bent ref away from getting to the final and knocking out the hosts.

The assassination of Kennedy in 1963. The next one was the death of Winston Churchill and his funeral in ‘65.

It was when I was 7, the disastrous World Cup qualifier against Poland in 1973. I think it was memorable because we watched it in our next door neighbours on their newly purchased colour TV

Depends what you call "big".

Remember Elvis burtsing onto the scene (two big sisters!). And London smog of the 50s.

First really major event was Cuban missile crisis followed by Kennedy's assassination followed by a few more.

Ridiculous Beatles concert in East Hamm when I was 14 - didn't hear a note!

I know what you mean, my dad rarely swore, and when he did you knew he was genuinely upset. He despised Thatcher and Murdoch.

Re: What is the first big news item you can remember?
It's all context. I think I only ever heard him say the f word once, when he shouted at Tony Benn again on the TV. That pissed off my mum, who was a bit of a socialist and admired Benn. But for someone who rarely swore, to hear a succession of albeit minor profanities had an effect.

I remember that Raquel Welch film being on TV too! It caused quite a stir, iirc.

I remember being vaguely aware of the Beatles and everyone with long hair and flares. My dad disapproved strongly. He also hated Charlie George's long hair and kept talking to the TV and telling him he was a bloody communist and to get his blasted hair cut. And he hated the way he'd lie on the ground with his arms outstretched whenever he scored and kiss the other players. Don't know what was worse, my dad's language or the kissing.

Vaguely remember Watergate and the attacks at the Munich Olympics. If I was a few months older, I'd remember the moon landing.

What you remember about your house is not a big news item, Sergei.

Re: What is the first big news item you can remember?
I have a few memories from my first house, when I was about two.

1) Being washed in the kitchen sink
2) Watching Raquel Welsh in 2m years BC
3) Seeing the beatles returning from somewhere.

I was born in 68, so no idea what the Beatles memory was, but I remember it clearly

The hunt in 1966 for police killer Harry Roberts, his mug shot gave me nightmares. Strangely I can't remember the 1966 World Cup.
